This is one of the oldest on-line discussions of Star Trek, the linear descendent of a forum dating back to the mid-1980s.This list serves several contemporary needs:
- Almost all of the other on-line Star Trek discussions have a topic limited to a particular aspect of the Star Trek universe -- Treknology, Klingon life, one particular Trek TV series, etc. While these lists are interesting and valuable, many discussions of Star Trek span the series and impact a wide range of subjects. This list addresses the need for a broadly-based discussion area that allows all things Trek. Our charter also allows a certain amount of wandering from the topic, as conversation among friends wanders from time to time. The list owner is charged with determining if the wandering has gone too far.
- There are widely-ranging discussions in USENET, but many people find these objectionable because of the lack of control over offensive message content. While the TREK list does not unreasonably regulate message content, controls exist against disruptive subscribers. The number one rule is "Be Polite." The TREK list also requires that you post from your subscribed address. This effectively keeps out SPAM and Troll messages.
- This list was also addresses a specific need for people who formerly participated in the FIDONET "echo" conference called TREK. With the growth of the Internet and the decreasing number of FidoNet nodes in North America, many people have lost FIDONET access and gone on to use the Internet. This list was formed by and for at least five former moderators and vice-moderators of the TREK Echo.
New members are welcome! In spite of the age of this list, and length of time that some of us have participated, we are still looking for fresh ideas and new friends.
